WAETAG Summer Scholarships

"Camp was a truly remarkable experience for me . . . a gift."   ~Mary J. Yap
"I am already saving my money so that I can attend another CTY program next year. I wish school was always this exciting."   ~Taylor E. Gawlik
While some of us look forward to lazy summers relaxing, many of our most talented young people thrill to the idea of challenging summer classes and creative workshops. Several four-year colleges offer embodiments of these dreams in the form of special summer camps. WAETAG annually awards scholarships to help fourth through twelfth grade students realize their dreams of attending the summer camp of their choice.
Judging from the thank you letters we receive after their summer experiences - such as those on page 8, from 2005's winners - the academic and social benefits of summer camp surpass even gifted expectations.
WAETAG will again award at least three $300 scholarships to 4th-12th grade students toward tuition at a four-year institution's summer camp for 2006 (families must find and enroll in the programs themselves).
Please advise students that the panel of teacher/judges consider carefully both the content and quality of the writing submitted.  Thus, even students not successful in applying the first time learn from the process.

Nicholas Green
Distinguished Student Awards
Deadline June 15, 2006

WAETAG and the National Association for Gifted Children are pleased to announce the NAGC Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Awards program for the 2005 -2006 school year. Originally funded by the Nicholas Green Foundation and NAGC, this award program is designed to recognize distinguished achievement in academics, leadership or the arts, in children grades 3 through 6. One child per state can be named a Nicholas Green Distinguished Student and that winner receives a $500 U.S. savings bond and an NAGC Certificate of Excellence.
The Nicholas Green Foundation was established by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year-old son Nicholas who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994. The Greens started the Distinguished Student Awards because they wanted to recognize young people who are working hard to make the most of their lives and develop their unique gifts and talents, and who are now about the age that Nicholas was when he died.
Christina Gray, from Bremerton, was the winner of the 2005 Nicholas Green Award in Washington. She accepted her award at the Vancouver WAETAG conference in October.  Her  acceptance speech is on page 9.
The Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Awards inspire children to achieve to their fullest potential, highlight high-ability students, and draw attention to the educational needs of our nation's gifted and talented students.
Nominations are accepted from parents, teachers, students, and community and civic groups.  Applications are available online at
www.waetag.net or from Stephen Martin at smart291@localaccess.com.  Packets are due by June 15, 2006.
